Artist-in-residence Chris Zhongtian Yuan presents an artist talk and performative reading, testing the iterative process of documenting previous projects and the potential of storytelling within different public spaces.

The evening centres on Intimate Labour, a scripted performance first presented in 2024. This piece is a first-person monologue that investigates the complex dualities of intimacy and tension encountered when making and exhibiting art within both domestic and institutional settings.

For this presentation at Studio Voltaire, Yuan builds on a recent iteration of the talk developed during a previous residency. The narrative follows a fictional resident artist who guides the audience through a series of interpersonal and institutional relationships over the past decade, focusing on their construction and collapse.

Accompanying the talk will be a selection of film, sound and sculptural work-in-progress. These elements act as visual aids, facilitating the convergence of archival material and live storytelling.

Following the talk, there will be a conversation between Yuan and Dot Zhihan Jia (Curator, Studios & Residencies, Studio Voltaire).
