Anthony Chin T W Residency

Singapore-based artist Anthony Chin T W will be in residence at Studio Voltaire from October 2026 to September 2027, marking his first project in the UK.

During his residency, Chin will research the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960), focusing on the Malayan Film Unit and Radio Malaya – the British colonial propaganda apparatus deployed during the conflict. Operating in coordination, the two bodies worked to construct a "Malayan" identity in service of British interests and Cold War counter-insurgency objectives. Both delivered their message through the target population's own languages, in Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Malay and Tamil, turning the familiar instrument of language itself into a vehicle for ideological content.

Anthony Chin T W  (b. 1969, Singapore) is a designer turned visual artist who holds an MA in Industrial Design from the Royal College of Art. His research-driven conceptual practice grows out of site-specific engagements with the historical, social and architectural stratifications of a place. Through the articulation of ordinary materials into poetic installations, his work unravels the latent power structures and complex geopolitical narratives that undergird the colonial past and the post-colonial present.

Chin is the third recipient of Studio Voltaire and LOEWE FOUNDATION’s year-long international residency. Via the award, Chin will receive:

  • A £25,000 stipend to support living costs and accommodation.
  • A rent-free studio at Studio Voltaire for the 12-month duration of the residency.
  • Budget for travel, equipment, materials and production.
  • A bespoke professional development and mentoring programme.
