Cas Bradbeer (they/them) is a cultural heritage practitioner, specialising in community-led histories. Their research projects focus on queer art history, ranging from documenting gender non-conformity in the V&A’s collections to assisting Gemma Rolls-Bentley with her anthology Queer Art: From Canvas to Club (2024). Their curatorial practice broadly spans identity and placemaking, working with galleries, museums and community centres to platform marginalised histories and underrepresented creatives. Cas is Heritage Officer for the London Borough of Newham, where they are developing Newham Heritage Centre, due to open in 2027.

Transmuted: Online Workshop
Finding Ourselves in Trans History with Cas Bradbeer
“What would someone in medieval London think if you told them you were a femmeboy?” You may be surprised to learn that some probably thought you hadn’t been staying warm and dry enough!
In this online workshop, cultural heritage practitioner Cas Bradbeer explores Trans histories as sites of self-discovery. This event is part of a series of online sessions that explore Trans histories and gender through a cultural heritage lens. Topics include reproductive healthcare and surrogacy, somatic consent, relationships, as well as conflict and repair.
The session will explore:
- How can we understand ourselves more deeply by relating to our Transcestors
- How our understanding of gender has been shaped and changed through ideas of humoral theory, ancestral spirits, social constructs and the ‘born this way’ idea.
The session will introduce these concepts, illustrated with documents of cultural heritage that Bradbeer has encountered through their research into histories of Trans possibility, followed by a series of creative activities to flesh out these resonances.
This digital event is hosted in collaboration with Transmuted, a volunteer-led Trans organisation based in the North of England, dedicated to uplifting underrepresented voices within Trans spaces and amplifying perspectives that are often silenced by society.
This series centres Trans people and experiences. Please read Transmuted’s Safer Spaces Guidelines before attending an event in this series.
