Murat Adash Residency

Artist and researcher Murat Adash was in residence at Studio Voltaire from June to September 2022.

During this time, Adash developed their first major museum exhibition, Correspondance (Surface), which was presented at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany (October 2022–January 2023). The residency offered space to bring together the exhibition’s different elements - dance, film, sound, and stage design - through both hands on experimentation and dialogue with Studio Voltaire’s wider artistic community.

Adash’s work was shaped by their ongoing research into camouflage as a queer and more-than-human choreographic strategy for resisting dominant systems of visibility. At Studio Voltaire, the residency allowed them to explore these ideas through rehearsals, choreography and collaborations with London-based VFX, sound and scenography artists.

This residency was generously supported by the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-east England (CHASE).

Murat Adash (b. 1985, Hanau, Germany) is a German–Turkish artist based between London and Berlin. Adash’s work has been shown internationally including at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Sakip Sabanci Museum, Istanbul; San Francisco Art Institute; Le Commun, Geneva; Mumok, Vienna; Het Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam; Manifesta 11, Zurich; Julius Caesar Gallery, Chicago; and, Grimmuseum, Berlin.
Adash has participated in residency programmes at Rupert, Vilnius; Delfina Foundation, London; Utopiana, Geneva and Mountain School of Arts, Los Angeles. Adash was a recent artist–in–residence at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. They hold an MFA in Visual Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and are currently pursuing a PhD in Art at Goldsmiths in London.
