Craig Fisher makes paintings, objects and large scale sculptural installations that question representations of violence, disaster and its aftermath. practice explores the pictorial, sculptural and ‘site specific’ boundaries of art practice. The work situates itself by exploiting and employing contradictory methods, referencing both ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture and juxtaposing the pictorial with the sculptural as potential spaces of slippage, which allow for discoveries beyond confined and referenced fields of art production.
Craig Fisher: Aftermath
Studio Voltaire presents Craig Fisher: Aftermath, a new large scale, sculptural installation made in response to the particular architectural contexts of Studio Voltaire’s unique exhibition space. This is Fisher's first large-scale solo show in London.
Upholstered pools of blood, shimmering and glittering outlines of unidentified bodies, spent weapons strewn on the floor… Aftermath presents a considerable development in Fisher’s practice. New pieces, beautifully crafted in fabric, adorn Studio Voltaire’s floor and ceiling – the former gothic style chapel is transformed. While individual details seem to reference avant-garde design, the overall impression is that of the latest media disaster, or is it a film set? Kill Bill meets South Park, The Shining via The Wizard of Oz and then back again through Bowling for Columbine? Fisher has delicately created an aftermath of multiple pop cultural references. Familiarity, confused by representational play, recedes and we are left with a nightmarish playground of soft things to consider.
