Beatrix Pang Residency

Hong Kong-based visual artist, cultural producer and independent publisher, Beatrix Pang Sin Kwok 彭倩幗 (they/them), was in residence at Studio Voltaire from January 2023 to January 2024.

Pang used the residency to expand their self-publishing practice and produce a series of zines in collaboration with Studio Voltaire’s studio community and audiences. They also furthered their experimentations with moving image, writing and printmaking, and also explore the potential of the kitchen and food to bring South London's diasporic communities together.

Pang’s early practice revolved around photography, lens-based medium and performance. In 2011, they founded Small Tune Press which publishes and produces artists’ books and zines. Pang also founded the independent publishers’ collective ZINE COOP to promote zine culture in Hong Kong and Queer Reads Library, a mobile library creating space for queer inclusivity and visibility in Hong Kong and the Asian Diaspora.

This was Pang’s first artist’s residency in Europe.

Pang was the first recipient of Studio Voltaire and LOEWE FOUNDATION’s inaugural year-long international residency. Via the award, Pang will receive:

  • A £25,000 stipend to support living costs and accommodation.
  • A rent-free studio at Studio Voltaire for the 12–month duration of the residency.
  • Budget for travel, equipment, materials and production.
  • Bespoke professional development and mentoring programme.
