Art Law Workshop:
Introduction to Art World Contracts
Join leading art lawyer Adam Jomeen for an interactive workshop focused on navigating art world contracts for UK-based artists.
The session will begin with a general overview of contract law, providing a foundational understanding of the essential elements that constitute a legally binding agreement. Jomeen will then introduce participants to various types of contracts specific to the art world, such as consignment agreements, representation agreements and commissioning contracts, explaining the distinct features and purposes of each.
Throughout the workshop, Jomeen will highlight critical clauses and common pitfalls to be aware of, drawing on real-world examples to illustrate the consequences of vague or poorly drafted contracts. He will also discuss recent disputes between artists and dealers that have arisen from unclear contractual terms, offering insights into how these issues can be avoided. The workshop will be highly interactive, with participants encouraged to share their own experiences and challenges with contracts in the art world.
To ensure a candid and open discussion, the workshop will adhere to Chatham House Rules – all conversations will be treated with complete confidence – creating a safe space for participants to engage and learn from one another.
