Studio Voltaire and K-Ink partner to host a Flash Tattoo Parlour coinciding with the current Beryl Cook / Tom of Finland exhibition.
Both artists explored the application of ink on skin in their artworks, from Tom of Finland’s iconic Tattooed Sailor series to Cook’s depictions of seamen, which synthesised Edward Burra’s paintings of dockers with the saucy seaside postcard images of Donald McGill. In their works, tattoos are celebrated but also communicate class, status, and sexual identity.
Supported by the formerly Peckham-based K-Ink, Dexter Kay, Elle Romain and Vincens Johan have made exclusive flash designs for the pop-up hosted at Studio Voltaire. Each artist has responded to the work of Beryl and Tom in their own unique style whilst capturing the essence of the works that have inspired them. Kay and Romain have focused on Tom of Finland, whilst Johan brings her colourful style to the work of Beryl Cook.
The pop-up studio will run from Wednesday 10–Sunday 14 July 2024 by appointment only. Tattoo placements will be limited to legs, arms and upper torso. Prices start from £120. To register your interest please email tattoo@studiovoltaire.org.
